Based on the beautiful and sophisticated design of the Sultans’ Istanas (palaces), the resort’s elegant wooden structures elevated above the ground to facilitate air circulation, steep pitched roofs with grilled gables, and a sea facing aspect to capture the coastal breeze, all reflect centuries of building knowledge to ensure perfect harmony with the environment in which it is set.

To further embrace the Malay heritage, local artisans and craftsmen were employed both for the construction using naturally finished local hardwood, as well as to create the intricately carved gables and fretwork.

This royally-inspired design has received a notable accolade in the form of the Aga Khan Award, recognising excellence in architecture.
